When is the best time to cut a hedge?
Late summer through autumn and into winter suits most hedges. Nesting birds are protected and it's an offence to damage an active nest, so anything with birds in it waits until nesting has finished.
Can you take the height down on a tall conifer hedge?
Usually yes, and we can keep it there with a regular cut. Worth knowing: leylandii and most conifers won't regrow from bare brown wood, so we reduce down to green growth rather than cutting into the old wood.

When should you cut a beech hedge?
Once a year in late summer, usually August. Cut then, beech keeps its brown leaves through winter, which is why it makes a good screen. Young hedges can take a second trim in early summer.
When should you cut a box hedge?
In late May or early June, with a second light trim in late summer if needed. Cut on a dry, overcast day: hot sun scorches fresh cuts and damp weather spreads box blight.
