A garden that needed more than a quick mow

An established hedge gives a garden privacy and structure, but spreading growth can gradually take over the space beside the lawn. Here, tall, uneven hedge tops and long grass had left the garden needing a more substantial visit. The customer asked for the hedges to be reduced and trimmed, the grass cut and the garden tidied.

The garden already had a clear layout: a long lawn between the boundary hedges, gravel areas near the house, paved paths, seating and mature planting. The job focused on bringing the growth back under control and tidying those existing spaces. The finished photographs show the same garden features with more defined hedge faces and a freshly cut lawn.

Hedge reduction and trimming to the requested size

The customer wanted a considerable cut-back. Our team reduced the hedge growth and trimmed the faces, bringing the boundaries to a more controlled shape. The progress photographs show the amount of material involved: substantial branches as well as finer trimmings, collected as the work moved through the garden.

A large reduction changes a hedge more than a routine maintenance trim. It can alter the screen, reveal older growth and leave a very different finish. When you enquire about your own hedge, explain whether your priority is a smaller boundary, a green face, privacy or easier access. Those priorities help our team discuss the extent of cutting that suits your garden.

Why brown sections are visible after the cut-back

The deep reduction exposed brown sections inside these established hedges. That is part of the result shown in the photographs. We keep the finish visible so you can judge the change in size and shape alongside the appearance of the hedge faces, and decide what matters most for your own boundary.

Hedge species respond differently to hard pruning. The Royal Horticultural Society advises caution with most conifer hedges because they do not regrow from old wood. A bare or brown face should therefore not be assumed to turn green again. If retaining a green screen is your priority, discuss a lighter trim before agreeing a substantial reduction; our team can assess the plant and the available options.

Grass cutting and a tidy finish around the garden

The lawn was cut as part of the same job. The before views show long grass along the hedge line; the later photographs show mowing lines across the main lawn. Combining the grass cut with the hedge work meant the customer could have the garden brought back under control in one coordinated job.

The clear-up matters just as much as the cutting. Branches, hedge trimmings and grass cuttings appear in the progress views, with material gathered into bags and on a sheet. The final views show the gravel approach, paths and lawn clear of those loose piles, with the existing seating and garden features still in place. For your own visit, tell us which areas need attention and agree how the cut material will be handled.

Planning a hedge reduction and garden tidy-up

A useful enquiry starts with a wide view of the full hedge, a photograph of the lawn and a view of the access. Include your postcode and approximate hedge height and length if you know them. Mention narrow gates, steps, neighbouring boundaries and any planting you want kept. Photographs taken from a safe, accessible position are enough to start the conversation.

The quote depends on the amount of hedge cutting, lawn size and condition, access, extra tidy-up tasks and the volume of cuttings. Our team can review your photographs on WhatsApp, discuss what is practical and confirm whether a visit is needed before giving a firm quote. Work and visit dates depend on availability, so sending photos is useful even when we cannot attend that week.

After a substantial tidy-up, regular maintenance can help keep fresh growth within the intended shape and prevent the grass becoming difficult to manage again. The right schedule depends on the hedge species, growing conditions and how you use the garden. Ask about follow-up care if you would like help keeping on top of it.

Plan your garden work

Choose the finish that works for your garden

Tell us what you want to keep, what needs reducing and how you want the garden to look afterwards. We can discuss the hedge work and wider tidy-up together.

01

The amount of cutting matters

A routine trim controls new growth; a substantial reduction changes the hedge's size and may expose brown sections. Discuss the intended finish before booking.

02

Include the lawn and clear-up

Send views of all the areas you want tidied, and say whether cuttings need taking away. Hedge work and grass cutting can be quoted together.

03

Start with photos

Your postcode, full-length hedge views and access photos help our team assess the job. A larger or complex garden may still need a visit.

Explore Hedge Trimming & Reductions
Can you reduce hedges and cut the grass in the same job?

Yes. This project combined hedge reduction and trimming with a grass cut and garden tidy-up. Send photos of the hedges, lawn and other areas needing attention so our team can confirm the combined scope and quote.

What is the difference between hedge trimming and hedge reduction?

Trimming usually tidies fresh growth and maintains the existing shape. Reduction takes more growth away to change the hedge's height or width. The customer requested a substantial cut-back here, which exposed brown sections. The suitable extent of cutting depends on the species, condition and finish you want.

Will a brown hedge turn green again after a deep cut-back?

Regrowth cannot be guaranteed. Most conifer hedges do not regrow from old wood, and different hedging plants respond differently to hard pruning. Show our team the hedge and explain whether a green screen is your priority before agreeing a large reduction.

What does a garden tidy-up include?

The tasks are agreed for your garden. Here, they included hedge reduction and trimming, grass cutting and clearing loose cuttings from the working areas. Tell us about any borders, paths or other areas you want included so the quote covers the work you actually need.

Can I send photos for a hedge-cutting quote?

Yes. Send your postcode, a wide view of the full hedge, lawn photos and a view of the access on WhatsApp, or use the enquiry form. Include approximate hedge dimensions if known and explain how much you want cut back. Our team reviews the photos and confirms whether a visit is needed before a firm quote.

How much does hedge reduction and a garden tidy-up cost?

The quote depends on hedge height and length, the extent of cutting, lawn size and condition, access, other tidy-up tasks and handling the cuttings. Send photos for an initial assessment. Our team confirms the agreed scope and final price; any optional AI estimate is approximate.

Will hedge and grass cuttings be taken away?

The handling of cuttings is agreed in your quote. The finished photographs show the working areas cleared of the loose piles visible during this job. Tell us whether you want material taken away or retained in an agreed place, and show us the access route.

Do you offer hedge cutting and garden maintenance outside Chester?

We cover Chester and nearby parts of Cheshire, Wirral, Deeside and the North Wales border within our service area. The area links on this page help you explore local services. Send your postcode so our team can confirm coverage and availability for your address.

How soon can you visit or carry out the work?

Dates depend on our team's availability and the size of the job. A same-week visit may not be available. Send photographs first so we can review the work, discuss a quote and confirm whether a site visit is needed before agreeing a booking.
