Why is the windward side of my hedge always thin?
Exposure, not disease. Wind coming off the estuary and across the higher ground dries and burns the upwind face, so it thins while the sheltered side grows away. Cutting the damaged side hard usually makes a conifer worse, because it will not reshoot from bare brown wood. We take it back gradually to green growth and let it thicken from there.
When is the right time to cut?
Late summer through autumn and into winter, once nesting has finished — active nests are legally protected. We avoid cutting in hard frost, and on exposed sites we would rather cut earlier in that window so the hedge is not carrying fresh cuts into the worst of the winter weather.
Can an overgrown hawthorn or blackthorn boundary be brought back?
Usually yes. Native hedging like hawthorn and blackthorn takes a hard cut well and regrows from old wood, which is why traditional hedgelaying works on it. Conifer screens are the opposite and will not recover from a cut into brown wood, so it matters which you have before agreeing how far to go.
