Whitchurch gardens are bigger than most of the town gardens we work in, and the trees have had time to grow into them. Around the older residential streets off the High Street and along Brownlow Street there are mature limes, beeches and horse chestnuts planted when the houses were built, now shading whole gardens and dropping limbs in a gale. Along the Llangollen canal edge and the low, wet ground around Brown Moss the trees are willow, alder and self-seeded ash and sycamore that lean out over boundaries and grow faster than anyone expects. Out on the lanes toward Tilstock and Prees Heath, cottages and farmhouses come with old field-boundary oaks and hedgerow trees that have been left to their own devices for decades, plus the usual leylandii screens planted for shelter and now well past roof height. Exposure is the constant — the town sits open to the wind crossing the plain, so heavy crowns and leaning trees get tested every winter. Whitchurch is the far end of our route, so we plan tree work here as a full visit: crown reductions, taking out wind-damaged limbs, cutting back overhang and removing smaller trees that have outgrown a Whitchurch garden, with the brash and timber cleared when that is arranged. It is the tree work these plots need.
