Tree work in Widnes is shaped by wind and what seeds itself. Widnes is flat and open to the Mersey estuary, so gardens get a battering in a south-westerly and we see a steady run of snapped limbs, split forks and trees leaning over a fence after a rough night. The older streets around Victoria Park, Birchfield Road and Farnworth have mature garden trees planted when the houses were built — big sycamores, limes and horse chestnuts that now tower over small plots and drop sap and seed onto cars. Along the old railway lines, the Sankey Canal and the scrubby edges of the estates, sycamore and ash seed themselves freely, and a sapling nobody noticed at the end of a Hough Green or Ditton garden becomes a tree shading the whole lawn ten years later.
