Damp is the thing that decides most painting jobs in Runcorn. With the Mersey and the Ship Canal on the doorstep there's a lot of moisture in the air, and the New Town estate houses — Castlefields, Palacefields, Murdishaw, Halton Brook, Windmill Hill — were built fast in the 60s and 70s with cold solid walls and poor ventilation, so paint flakes and you get black mould staining in bathroom corners, behind wardrobes and on north-facing chimney breasts. Slap fresh emulsion straight over that and it bleeds back through in months. Then there's the older Old Town and Halton Village terraces, where flaking gloss, swollen woodwork and bare timber on sills come off the damp. A big chunk of the work here is rental and ex-council stock needing a clean, neutral landlord-ready repaint between tenancies. So we treat the mould and seal stains first, prep the surface properly, fill and sand the woodwork, then paint — so it actually lasts.

Questions
Yes, and it's one of our most common Runcorn jobs because of the damp coming off the estuary and canal, especially in the colder New Town estate houses. Painting straight over it never works — we treat and kill the mould, seal the staining with the right stain-block, and then paint, so it doesn't bleed straight back through. We'll also flag if it's a ventilation or condensation issue you'll want to keep on top of.
That's a regular one for us across Castlefields, Palacefields, Halton Brook and Murdishaw. We'll wash down, fill and sand any knocks, treat any damp staining, and put a couple of clean neutral coats through so it's ready to re-let. Send photos room by room and we'll quote it properly and tell you how long it'll take.
Usually yes. In the Old Town and Halton Village terraces the damp swells and lifts the gloss over time. We rub back the loose paint, dry and fill where it's needed, prime any bare timber and re-gloss — if a sill's actually rotted through we'll tell you straight, but most just need proper prep and repainting.
It can. In the colder, less-ventilated estate houses the moisture in the air lengthens drying times, so we don't rush the recoats — rushing traps damp under the paint and it fails early. We warm and ventilate the room where we can and work to the paint's proper recoat times, so each coat cures the way it should.
After we've treated and sealed the mould, we use a moisture-resistant, mould-inhibiting paint made for bathrooms and prep the surface properly, which holds up far better than standard emulsion. We'll be straight with you though — if condensation and poor ventilation are the real cause, keeping a window or extractor going is part of stopping it coming back.
