The job

What needed doing

The customer had noticed the mortar between the bricks on the chimney stack looking crumbly, with a little debris coming down onto the roof. They were worried about water getting in but were not sure whether it was a small maintenance job or something bigger. They wanted an honest look and a clear steer either way.

The pointing was sound again and the stack was better protected against driving rain. The customer was told plainly that no leadwork or cowl work was needed at this stage, so there was nothing to pay for beyond the repointing itself.

Work completed

Assessed safe access to the stack and confirmed no scaffold was needed for this job
Raked out the loose, weathered mortar joints on the affected faces
Repointed the joints with fresh mortar and finished them off neatly
Checked the flashing and cowl while up there and flagged nothing else needing attention
